Raw scallops and uni are rare delicacies that may taste heavenly to a sushi lover, but those who have an aversion to raw seafood may find them gross. Even the humble raw salmon and tuna may not go down well with people who are scared of eating anything that’s straight out of the sea.

I don’t blame them because people belong to different cultures and you don’t have the tradition of eating raw fish in western countries.  So a person who has eaten thoroughly cooked fish or grilled seafood since he was a child may find the raw stuff intimidating.

On the same note, I would like to say that there are many others who are adventurous and willing to open up to a whole new world of culinary experiences. The fact that sushi has become so popular in the US and other parts of the world is a testimony of that.

Those who are content in their comfort zone and would rather not let their palate tread on an unknown path can still enjoy sushi. I dedicate this post to my friends who are intimidated by the idea of eating raw fish but still want to savor this delicacy. Here’s presenting the 11 easy cooked sushi recipes to try at home.

Easy Cooked Sushi Recipes

While the sushi snobs may not like this idea and find it against the core tradition of eating sushi, cooked sushi dishes are raging in popularity. While there’s fatty tuna, hamachi, ikura, and awabi for those who love eating the raw stuff, the other side has its fair share of shrimp tempura, smoked salmon, imitation crab, and cooked taco.

1. Jumbo Shrimp Sushi Roll

Shrimps are delicious but you don’t need to eat them raw to enjoy sushi rolls. Here’s one of the best cooked sushi recipes that involve cooked jumbo shrimp. You may boil, grill, bake, or deep fry as you wish.

Ingredients:

The first step involves cooking short-grain sushi rice in a cooker and pot and then seasoning it with vinegar, salt, and sugar. I have created an article that explains the process of making sushi rice in detail, check it out.

Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the seaweed into half and a knife to cut the cooked shrimps lengthwise. While the sushi rice cools, you can prepare the fillings for your sushi.

Place a bamboo mat on the kitchen table and cover it with a plastic cling film or you may put it in a zip lock bag to prevent the rice from sticking to the mat.

Put the nori sheet over the bamboo mat, rough side up and spread a half cup of sushi rice over it. Moisten your fingers and apply gentle pressure to ensure that the rice sticks on well.

Sprinkle the toasted sesame seeds on the rice and flip it upside down. Now, arrange the fillings on the seaweed, slightly towards you. First place two cooked shrimps in a straight line, then add cucumber, avocado, and bell pepper strips.

Lift the bamboo mat from your side and start rolling. Gently squeeze the inner contents as you roll to get a compact cylinder-like shape. When you reach the other end, seal it with a few drops of water.

Use a sharp Japanese sushi knife (see my reviews) to cut the sushi roll into 6-8 equal pieces and serve with wasabi and soy sauce.

2. Roasted Wild Salmon Sushi Roll

Wild salmon has a superior texture than farmed salmon, but eating them raw is risky due to higher chances of worms. With this easy cooked recipe, you can breathe easy and gorge on wild salmon as much as you like!

Ingredients:

First, preheat the oven to a temperature of 400 degrees. Now measure the rice, rinse it and cook in a pot or cooker. If you are a beginner in sushi making, refer to the instructions for cooking and seasoning sushi rice in this article.

While the sushi rice cooks, season the wild salmon with kosher salt and let it sit for 10 minutes. Take a bowl and mix julienned carrots and cucumbers with 1/4 cup rice vinegar, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp sugar, and 1 tbsp sesame oil.

Now put the seasoned wild salmon fillets on a baking sheet and put into the oven. Roast for 8-10 minutes, let them cool completely and then use a fork to flake into small portions to be used as fillings.

To start assembling, keep the bamboo mat on the table and put a nori sheet on it. Moisten your hands and take a medium ball of seasoned sushi rice. Spread it over the nori sheet evenly.

Take a spoonful of mayonnaise and spread evenly at the center of the sushi rice. Now, add the vegetable strips on it, next arrange the baked salmon and a few slices of avocado to its side.

Start rolling the bamboo mat from the end that is closer to you and gently press as you roll to compress the fillings within. Seal the ends by dampening the nori sheet slightly.

Moisten the blade of a sushi knife and cut the sushi roll into 6-8 pieces. Serve with soy sauce and pickled ginger.

3. Lion King California Sushi Roll

I consider this sushi roll the king of all easy cooked sushi recipes because you not only cook the fillings but the entire roll is baked to perfect crustiness!

Ingredients:

Any sushi recipe starts with cooking sushi rice, make sure you do this at least 30 minutes in advance because it takes time to cook, cool, and then season the rice. Read my article that explains the process in detail.

Place the bamboo sushi mat on the table and cover it with a plastic wrap. Now, keep the nori sheet over the covered bamboo mat.

Take half a cup of seasoned sushi rice and spread it across the nori sheet, leaving half an inch gap on all sides. Flip the nori sheet to make it upside down.

Now take a spoonful of imitation crab-mayo mixture and spread it in a straight line towards the middle of the nori sheet. Add cucumber strips and avocado slices along its length.

Start rolling by lifting the bamboo mat towards you and make a compact inside-out roll. Place the salmon sashimi-style pieces over the roll, one after another to cover the entire length. Hug the roll tightly with the bamboo mat to shape them properly.

Let the roll sit for 2 minutes with the plastic cover on it and preheat the oven to 400 F. Take a sharp Japanese knife and cut the roll into 6-8 pieces. Remove the plastic wrap and place the sushi pieces on a foil wrap, salmon side up.

Drizzle spicy mayo and unagi sauce over the roll and garnish with fish eggs. Fold the foil from four sides to prevent the sauce from leaking.

Bake for 5 minutes and then pour the extra sauce. Roast again for 3 minutes or until the mayo sauce starts to bubble. Top up with some finely chopped scallions for garnish and serve.

This is the Hawaiian-style nigiri sushi but I wanted to include it in my list of 11 easy cooked recipes because it’s different, delicious, and simple to cook.

To cook perfect sushi rice in a cooker or pot, refer to my step-by-step instructions in this article. While the rice cooks, prepare the chicken breasts for the recipe.

Cut the chicken breasts into 2-3 strips. Add sesame oil to the frying pan and put the chicken strips when the oil becomes hot. Sprinkle some salt on the chicken and flip over. Add salt on the other side and cook till both sides become slightly golden in color.

When the chicken meat is well cooked, pour some thick teriyaki sauce and let it simmer for a few minutes to let the teriyaki flavor infuse into chicken. Take out in a plate and let it cool.

11. Tamago Sushi Roll

Tamago is the sweet Japanese omelet that makes a fantastic ingredient for one of the 11 easy cooked sushi recipes. I have created an in-depth article that explores the different aspects of tamago, instructions on how to make Japanese sweet omelet and useful tips for beginners.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of seasoned sushi rice
  • 4 whole eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of mirin (Japanese rice wine)
  • Half a cucumber, cut into thin strips
  • ¼ cup dashi stock
  • 1 avocado, seed removed and cut into slices
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Pickled ginger
  • Wasabi
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • ½ teaspoon Soy sauce

Take a bowl and beat the 4 eggs into it until fluffy. Add sugar, mirin, dashi stock, soya sauce, and mix until the sugar dissolves completely.

Put a pan like this over the stove, add vegetable oil and pour a thin layer of egg mixture, when the bottom turns firm, fold it neatly and push to one side of the pan.

Add some more oil and pour more egg mixture. When the new layer solidifies a bit, fold the old omelet roll over the new layer to make a thicker roll. Continue this process until all egg mixture is used up.

Put the thick and sweet Japanese omelet on a plate and use a sharp sushi knife to cut it into thick and long strips.

Now, let’s get rolling! Put the bamboo mat on a zip lock bag and keep it on the kitchen table. Place the Nori sheet over it.

Take half a cup of seasoned sushi rice and spread evenly on the nori sheet. Press with your moist fingers to ensure that sushi rice sticks to the sheet. Sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds on it.

Flip over the nori sheet to have the sushi rice layer facing downwards and nori side upwards. Add one strip of tamago, cucumber, and a few slices of avocado an inch away from the end that’s close to you.

Now, lift the bamboo mat from your end and start rolling. Squeeze gently as you roll to ensure that the ingredients stay compact within the roll.

When you reach the other end, seal the edges and cut the roll into 6-8 equal pieces. Serve with wasabi, pickled ginger and soya sauce.
